Through experiences both with Network 75 and Capita, I have developed into a confident young adult who believes in her own capabilities and I am ready to start full-time employment and further my career in Civil Engineering.

Stephanie will be graduating this year with an MEng (Hons) Civil Engineering from the University of South Wales and has secured a full time job at her host company Capita Property & Infrastructure Ltd. Stephanie joined the Network75 scheme in 2012, completed her BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering in 2017 and progressed to study the MEng in her final year. Stephanie has had a variety of opportunities with her host company including working on the Eastern Bay Link project in Cardiff.

What has your experience of Network75 been like to date?

My experience on the Network 75 scheme has been exceptional, the support and guidance I have received has made the last 6 years issue free and enjoyable, allowing me to achieve in my academic studies and develop as a civil engineer within the workplace. The link between Network 75 and my host company has been outstanding. The connection between Capita , Network 75 and the university ensured that I was able to study to achieve academically and complete work duties to develop in the workplace. The support I have received from the Network 75 scheme has been outstanding. The minor issues I have had during my time on the scheme have been sorted out quickly and I have received full support from the team at Network 75.

What does your role with Capita involve?

At Capita, my role is within the Infrastructure sector. My main responsibility is to complete highway designs and contract drawings both preliminary and detailed design stage, are completed to correct standards. I also have the responsibility of updating drawings and models to As Built status, by identifying changes and alterations which have occured during the construction stage of the project. I also undertake topographical surveys for projects which require the ground model to be established.

What advantages has completing your degree through Network75 given you?

I have gained experience on the Network 75 scheme which a full time student may not experience during their studies. I have presented to an assembly member, representing Network 75, I have also completed presentations representing Capita. I believe my presentation and communication skills have developed significantly due to the experiences I have been offered and I have gained in confidence as the scheme has progressed. I am truly grateful for the experiences I have received while studying on the Network 75 scheme.

How do you view your employment prospects upon graduating from the Network75 scheme?

I believe my employment prospects are high, I was offered a permanent position within my host company a year before graduating. The experience I have gained during my six years on the Network 75 scheme is invaluable. I have been able to experience a wide variety of civil engineering works; from being on site, to design and topographical surveying, experience which has enhanced my capabilities as an engineer significantly.

Do you have any advice for students considering the Network75 scheme?

My advice to a student considering Network 75 is to grasp the opportunity with both hands! The best piece of advice I can give to a student starting Network 75 is to be organised, time management is key to ensuring you can balance work, education and social life. I believe that the Network 75 scheme has enhanced my ability as an engineer. I have learnt theory at the university along with practical experience in the workplace.
