Degree: MSc Building Information Modelling & Sustainability
The practical experience and knowledge that you gain in a placement with Network75 is invaluable, and allows you to put what you learn in university into practice in real live projects. In reverse, it gives you the practical knowledge to better understand the content being taught.
Kieron's host company Hydrock is a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy and specialist remediation contractor with offices all over the UK. It is an expanding company which operates across a number of sectors offering a full complement of engineering services from full developments to small site investigations. It employs over 500 people in the UK and was ranked as 29th in the annual Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to work for in 2017.
Kieron studied his undergraduate degree full time at the University of South Wales before joining Network75 as a Postgraduate Student. He is the first Network75 student to study an MSc course through the scheme via distance learning. The MSc Building Information Modelling course is available to study online at the University of South Wales via the Professional Academy.
My current position is a Trainee BIM Technician which includes the use of Revit, AutoCAD, and other 3D modelling software in the production, management, and delivery of engineering drawings and models. I also support the engineering team with any BIM or software queries as well as co-ordinating MEP services with other engineering disciplines. Since working at Hydrock I have gained a vast working knowledge of a range of BIM software, practices and standards and even started to explore new innovative practices to benefit the design team.
As a MSc BIM student, my experience has been very unique compared to my other courses where I have the flexibility to learn at my own pace in a completely online course. It has been very beneficial as what I learn from university and at Hydrock complement each other very well. My time at Hydrock uses a lot of Revit and Navisworks which allowed me to excel at the practical elements of my course.

I have been involved in large variety of projects in the residential and commercial sectors ranging from schools and care homes to a project for a leading formula one team. One particular project I have been involved with is the Taff Vale redevelopment in Pontypridd which consists of two five-storey office blocks and a mixed-use council-owned library/leisure facility. My responsibilities for the project include the delivery of the MEP package to BIM level 2 whilst assisting with solar and shading studies for the project.
I chose Building Information Modelling as a career as it’s a diverse and really interesting field to be involved in. With BIM becoming the norm and it also being required on all centrally procured government projects, I realised that this knowledge would be highly valued by employers and put me ahead of my peers.
